    How to use a secret Google Maps function to learn about the history of your house

    You can even see what your own home looked like back in the day because Google Maps has been archiving every image taken of every area since 2007.

    Street image, one of Google Maps’ most helpful features, provides a virtual image of your home’s exterior, giving the impression that you are there in person and up close. Street View has been available for quite some time.If you’re heading somewhere new and want to get a feel for the location and the terrain first, this is a really useful tool.

    But did you know that you can travel through time to see how a place seemed in the past? You can even see what your own home looked like back in the day because Google Maps has been archiving every image taken of every area since 2007. While not all places will have yearly updates, some may contain images dating back 10 to 15 years.

    Here’s a guide on how to use this feature.

    How to use Google Maps on a laptop to view an old location

    • Go to the Google Maps website 
    • Put a street address in the search bar.

    • Click the image of your place just above the address on the left-hand side.

    To view other areas of the neighbourhood, navigate the arrows on the screen while using Street View & 360 to see the street. (CyberGuy.com)

    • There should be a tiny black box inside the big Street View image. Click on See more dates.

    • The bottom of the screen will provide earlier images of the location you looked for.

    How to use Google Maps on your phone to view an old location

    • Go to the Google Maps
    • Type in an required address in the search bar

    • In the centre of the screen, below the map, click the picture of your location

    Select a photo of the area you are in.. (CyberGuy.com)

    • In the top right corner of the screen, click the tiny white circle.

    • Tap “See more dates” after tapping your address in the white space below the white image of the property at the bottom of your screen.

    In the bottom white section, pick your address, and then select “See more dates.” (CyberGuy.com)

    • The bottom of the screen will display earlier images of the location you searched. To view the property’s appearance at the time, tap each one.

    What other Feature does Google Maps offer?

    You may also use a tonne of other helpful tools that Google Maps offers. Some of my favourites are listed here.

    There are many other things you can do when researching a place outside just using Street View. Depending on your demands, Google Maps offers a variety of perspectives, such as a traffic view, a transit view, a bicycling view, and more. To choose a different view, follow these steps.

    • Go to the Google Maps website 
    • Type in an address in the search bar
    • At the bottom of the map, click on Layers
    • then Click on More also
    • Choose a view from the alternatives listed that you want to see.

    In addition, Google Maps will show you a tonne of helpful locations close to the spot you’re looking for, such as lodging options, dining options, attractions, and more. Here’s where to look for those choices.

    • Go to the Google Maps website 
    • Type in an address in the search bar
    • There will be a huge selection of alternatives laid out for you to choose from at the top of the map. The map will expand out to the closest locations when you select what you’re looking for (pharmacies, ATMs, etc.).

    Send to phone you your location 

    If you have a Google account and require the map with you at all times, you can send the position from your computer to your phone.

    • Log into your Google account (Compulsory)
    • Go to the Google Maps website 
    • Type in an address in the search bar
    • Click Send to phone 
    • Select whether you want to send or share the location via text or email.
