The U.S. Geological Survey (USG) reports that the lava flows from Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano’s second eruption of the year are currently restricted to the volcano’s surrounding crater.
Kilauea volcano in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park started erupting around 4:44 a.m. HST, or 10:44 a.m. ET, according to the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO).
On Wednesday, the second-largest volcano in Hawaii, Kilauea, erupted again. (USGS)
A video of the eruption showed the night sky turning bright as lava and flames soared into the air and started to fill the volcano’s surrounding crater.
The USGS reported that “#Kilauea is currently erupting from the #Halemaumau summit crater.” A new update from HVO will be available soon. USGS is streaming the action live.
The agency shared a video that geologists from the HVO had captured of the crater’s west wall, which was surrounded by numerous vents that were still active with lava flooding the crater basin.
According to the USGS, Kilauea’s summit caldera’s Halema’uma’u crater is the only place where eruptive activity is occurring.

The aviation colour code and alert level for the volcano were to remain WARNING/RED due to the high risks connected with the eruption and related hazards. It also stated that none of the activity along the East Rift Zone or Southwest Rift Zone is uncommon.
The main danger is the volcanic gas because the eruption is taking place in a section of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park that is closed off to the public.
According to the USGS, water vapour, carbon dioxide, and sulphur dioxide make up the majority of volcanic gas. Volcanic gas is a risk since it can have significant effects downwind and produce vog, also known as volcanic smog.
Vog, the USGS continued, presents a threat to people, livestock, and crops.
One of the most active volcanoes in the world, Kilauea’s most recent eruption lasted 61 days and occurred in January 2023.
Prior to that, the second-largest volcano in Hawaii experienced an eruption in September 2021, which was followed by 16 months of volcanic activity.
