Ja Morant, a star for the Memphis Grizzlies, was given a 25-game suspension by the NBA on Friday as a result of his “conduct detrimental to the league,” which was the subject of an inquiry into a second incident in which he looked to be brandishing a gun on social media.
The league announced on Friday that Morant will face an immediate suspension. The suspension will last for the first 25 games of the 2023 season and will not be compensated.

Ja Morant’s decision to use a gun on social media once more is concerning and troubling, especially in light of the identical behaviour from March, for which he had received an eight-game suspension, according to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.
“It’s especially alarming that other young people might adopt Ja’s behaviour. Given these facts, we think a suspension of 25 games is reasonable and makes it obvious that using firearms carelessly or irresponsibly won’t be accepted.
“Ja needs to put basketball on hold for the moment. He will have to create and complete a programme with the league that specifically tackles the conditions that caused him to repeat this damaging behaviour before he is allowed to play again.

After appearing on Instagram Live and showing a gun “while in an intoxicated state at a Denver area nightclub,” Morant was previously given an eight-game suspension by the NBA in March. In less than two months, he was once more captured on a friend’s social media “intentionally and prominently displaying a gun.”
“Morant wielded the firearm while knowing he was being recorded and that the recording was being live streamed on Instagram Live, despite having made commitments to the NBA and public statements that he would not repeat the conduct for which he was previously disciplined,” the league stated.
This season, Morant is anticipated to earn roughly $33.5 million. He will now miss out on roughly $7.5 million, or slightly over $300,000 per game, throughout this suspension.
In a statement released on Friday, Morant said, “I’ve had time to think about it, and I realise how much hurt I’ve caused.”

“I would like to express my regret to the NBA, the Grizzlies, my team, and the community of Memphis. I apologise for the hurt I’ve caused to Adam Silver, Zach Kleiman, and Robert Pera, who offered me the chance to become a professional athlete and have supported me. I apologise for failing to be a good role model for the children who look up to me. I’m going to improve, I swear. I’m going to be a better ambassador for all of my sponsors’ brands. And I’m going to make it up to all of my admirers, I swear.
The NBA did not make clear what requirements Morant must fulfil in order to be eligible to return.
